Has graduated from Moscow Mining Institute in 1959. Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (1990), Full Professor (2000), Correspondent Member of the Russian Academy of Science (2003), Chairman of the National Commission on tsunami at the Department of Earth Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences (since 2009), member of the International Commission on tsunami IOC / UNESCO, Editor-in-Chief of the “Geosystems of Transition Zones” Journal, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the “Pacific Geology” Journal, member of the Editorial Boards of the "Volcanology and Seismology", "Vestnik of FEB RAS" and "Bulletin of the North-Eastern Scientific Center" Journals.
Has worked at Skochinsky Institute of Mining (Lyubertsy, Moscow region), Institute of Optical-Physical Measurements of the USSR Gosstandart (Moscow), the State Oceanographic Institute (GOIN) of the Goskomgidromet, headed the Department of Earth Sciences of the Russian Foundation for Basic Research (RFBR), taught at the Moscow Institute of Engineers of Civil Aviation and the Moscow Mining Institute.
From 2004 to 2015 Boris W.Levin was a Head of the Institute of Marine Geology and Geophysics of the FEB RAS. Now he is a research supervisor (since 2015) of this Institute, a chief researcher of S.L.Soloviev Tsunami Laboratory of P.P.Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the RAS.
The “Dynamic processes in rocks and the ocean near a seismic source” thesis for a degree of Doctor of Physical and Mathematical sciences in the fields "Geophysics", and "Mechanics of solids, soils and rocks" has been defended in 1990.
Author of more than 300 publications, including 7 monographs and 8 author’s certificates.

Research interests:
  • relationship of features of the Earth kinematics with dynamic characteristics of the planet shape and variation of the parameters of geospheres;
  • study of physical processes in a tsunami sourсe and a sea-quake source;
  • structural analysis of extreme fluctuations of sea level and paleotsunami traces for assessment of coastal tsunami hazard;
  • development of complex methods of earthquake prediction;
  • research of the problems of global seismicity.
