Graduated from Moscow mining Institute (1959). Doctor of Sciences, Physics and Mathematics (1990), Professor (2000), Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (2003), Chairman of the National Commission on tsunami at the Department of Earth Sciences Russian Academy of Sciences (since 2009), member of the International Commission on tsunami IOC / UNESCO. Editor-in-Chief of the journal "Geosystems of Transition Zones", Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the journal "Pacific Geology", member of the Editorial Boards of the journals "Volcanology and Seismology", "Vestnik of FEB RAS", "Bulletin of the North-Eastern Scientific Center".
Worked at Skochinskij Institute of Mining (Lyubertsy, Moscow region), Institute of Optical-Physical Measurements, Gosstandart of the USSR (Moscow), the State Oceanographic Institute (GOIN), Goskomgidromet, headed the Department of Earth Sciences Russian Foundation for Basic Research (RFBR), taught at the Moscow Institute of Engineers of Civil Aviation and the Moscow Mining Institute.
From 2004 to 2015 he was Director of the Institute of Marine Geology and Geophysics FEB RAS. Now he is scientific Director (since 2015) of this Institute, chief researcher of S. L. Soloviev laboratory of tsunami of Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, Russian Academy of Sciences.
Thesis "Dynamic processes in rocks and the ocean near a seismic source" for the degree of Doctor of Sciences, in the fields "Geophysics", and "Mechanics of solids, soils and rocks" was defended in 1990.
Author of more than 300 publications, including 7 monographs and 8 certificates of authorship.
